Description: Asparagus originated in the Mediterranean and was considered a delicacy by the ancient Greeks. Mary Washington is the classic asparagus heirloom. High yielding perennial that produces tender spears for years.
Planting Instructions: Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before last frost. Plant seeds 1" deep in flats and keep evenly moist until the seedlings germinate, which can take up to 8 weeks. Trasnplant seedlings 18" apart after danger of frost has passed. Asparagus like very rich, deep soil with good drainage. Keep asparagus bed well weeded. Cut plants back to 1" in the fall and mulch well over winter. Top dress plants with well-composted manure in spring. Begin harvest in the third year.
