Description: Also known as Escarole, this tasty and versatile green does well in salads and cooked. Mildly bitter, the wide ruffled leaves are similar to a leaf lettuce. Excellent choice for a fall crop but turns increasingly bitter with hotter summer temps.

Planting Instructions: 80 days. Can be started indoors in cooler climates as early as March or outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked. Sprinkle seeds onto prepared beds or rows and cover with a layer of soil. Choose a location that gets full sun to partial shade in soil that is rich and well-drained. Keep evenly moist until seedlings emerge, ususally within a week or two. Thin seedlings or transplant from indoors to 10-12" apart when they a few sets of true leaves. Requires even mositure during the growing season and are heavy nitrogen feeders.
