These perennial (down to zone 4) plants hail from China where they have been used in traditional medicine. Spiky plants grow 1-2' high and produce bright blue to purple flowers from mid to late summer or early fall.
Growing information: Sow seeds in cell packs in a seed starting mix 4-6 weeks before last frost. Press seeds into soil and lightly cover. Keep warm (65-70) until germination, about 14-21 days. Can be direct sowed outdoors after danger of frost. Transplant seedlings into well-prepared beds, 12-18" apart. Prefers partial shade to full sun and well drained soil. Provide regular feeding with a balance fertilizer.
